STATEMENT ON THE ASSASSINATION OF PROMINENT TAXI OPERATOR, MR DAVID SNYMAN

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Mr S'bu Ndebele, condemns in the strongest terms the assassination of prominent councillor and taxi operator, Mr David Snyman at his home in KwaDukuza, North Coast, last night. Mr Snyman was gunned down whilst speaking to his sister on a cellular phone.

Councillor Snyman was a prominent member of the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association. His death is extremely disturbing particularly because there has been an ongoing correspondence with SAPS management appealing for protection after he started receiving numerous death threats. Mr Snyman was instrumental in attempts to find a lasting solution between the warring Dolphin Coast and KwaDukuza taxi associations.

Mr Ndebele is calling upon SAPS management in the province to institute an immediate investigation, which must lead to a speedy apprehension of the culprits. He has also urged the Alexander Judicial Commission into Taxi Violence to independently investigate this deplorable killing as a matter of urgency and to leave no stone unturned in bringing about stability within the industry. He also appeals to the community at large to fully co-operate with law enforcement agencies in bringing the culprits before the full might of the law.

Mr Ndebele extends his heartfelt condolences to the Snyman family, relatives and friends.
