TRAFFIC OFFICER RUN OVER BY SPEEDING CAR
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Mr S'bu Ndebele, has expressed outrage at the senseless killing of a Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) Traffic Officer on the N3 near Estcourt in the Midlands at approximately 07:15 this morning.

Two Traffic Officers stationed at RTI Estcourt were conducting a speed timing exercise on the N3 Northbound, when they trapped a motorist travelling at 175km/h in a 120km/h zone. The speeding motorist allegedly failed to stop before losing control of his car which then veered out of control and ploughed into the patrol car and Officer Radebe who was standing outside his car.

Officer Radebe died at the scene and his colleague escaped unhurt. The driver and his wife suffered moderate injuries and were rushed to the Estcourt Provincial Hospital. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated against the driver of the car. Officer Sipho Radebe aged forty one (41) years had been a Traffic Officer with the Road Traffic Inspectorate for fourteen (14) years. He is survived by his wife and children.

Minister Ndebele expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased officer. The Minister once again called for tougher punishment for those motorists who display a blatant disregard for road rules. "It is time for all road users to become more responsible for their safety and the safety of other road users. We need to desperately stop the ongoing carnage that is ravaging our people. "I again call on all motorists to be more vigilant and law abiding road users,". Minister Ndebele said.
