SUPER STARS SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL ROAD SAFETY DAY
South Africa’s own super stars, Mandoza, Rebecca Malope, Mzekezeke,
Avanti, and Ntando are pledging their support to International Road Safety
Day. Tomorrow evening (Tuesday) 6 April 2004, the stars will attend a road
safety symposium at the Riverside Hotel in Durban between 17h00 and 20h00,
hosted by KZN Transport MEC Mr. S’bu Ndebele.
Approximately 120 people including a broad spectrum of key decision
makers in the road transport sector representing intellectuals, business,
and transport officials will attend the symposium.
Speakers at the symposium include Dr. Saths Cooper, vice chairman of
the Road Accident Fund (RAF), Head of the University of Natal’s Accident
Research Centre (UNIARC) Dr. Mongezi Noah and Independent Researcher
Stacey Van Schalwyk.
The topics to be debated include:
- Revisioning the RAF towards road safety.
- Car Advertisements – symbolisms and mediation of driving habits
and culture in the media: how are these understood and assimilated by
the public?
- Motorists are pedestrians first.
The symposium will culminate in International World Health Day, which
has been dedicated to Road Safety. The event will take place at Kingsmead
Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, April 7 commencing at 10h00 and is expected
to draw about 50 000 people.
Members of the public are informed that as part of World Road Safety
Day on Wednesday, there will be a procession of cars from KwaMashu, Umlazi
and Marianhill. The roads that will be affected by the cavalcade
commencing from KwaMashu SAPS include Ntombela Road, M25 Malandela Road,
North Coast Road, Connought Bridge, Umgeni Road south bound, Soldiers Way,
Leopold Street, Canongate Road and Berea Road up to Botha’s Gardens.
The convoy from Marianhill will proceed from the Road Traffic
Inspectorate offices in Pinetown. The roads that will be affected are
Stockville Road, Richmond Road, Old Main Road towards Cowies Hill, Jan
Smuts Highway, N3 Western Freeway, Berea/Tollgate off ramp, Berea Road
East and M8 Glenwood intersection into Botha’s Gardens.
The route from Umlazi will start from Umlazi SAPS on Isilo Road. The
following areas will be affected: Mangosuthu Highway, Main Road 1902 at
M30, R102 South, M30 South Coast Road, M7 west bound, R102 City/Umbilo,
Umbilo Road/Gale Street split into Botha’s Gardens.
From Botha’s Garden the convoy will proceed east on West Street and
then into Stanger Street. Upon Stanger Street left into Kingsmead Close,
West along Kingsmead Close and left into the Cricket Stadium.
Any inconvenience caused to the public is regretted. All members of the
public are invited to show their commitment to road safety by being
present at the Kingsmead Cricket Grounds on April 7.
