SCHOOL CHILDREN IN A BUS CRASH
A BUS ACCIDENT OCCURED ON THE R66 NEAR ULUNDI TODAY.
THE BUS WAS CARRYING SIXTY-FOUR HIGH SCHOOL CHILDREN AND SIX TEACHERS.
The bus was traveling at about 06h00 in the morning
from Ndlovana High School in Vryheid to Chesterville outside Durban. The
school children were going to attend a sports day function when the bus
driver lost control of the bus and it overturned. Up to now four children
are critically injured, twelve of whom sustained serious injuries and
forty-eight sustained minor injuries. They were taken to Nkonjeni Hospital
for medical care.
After the bus overturned the driver fled the scene.
However the bus was in an unroadworthy condition and it was impounded to
the Melmoth Traffic Station.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Safety and Security
Mr. Bheki Cele said that "the department will send out a technical
team on Monday to conduct a full and thorough investigation to ind
out if there was anything else which contributed to the crash besides the
driver losing control of the bus". The bus belongs to Universal
Samira of Chatsworth in Durban.
