SCHOOL CHILDREN IN A BUS CRASH

A BUS ACCIDENT OCCURED ON THE R66 NEAR ULUNDI TODAY. THE BUS WAS CARRYING SIXTY-FOUR HIGH SCHOOL CHILDREN AND SIX TEACHERS.

The bus was traveling at about 06h00 in the morning from Ndlovana High School in Vryheid to Chesterville outside Durban. The school children were going to attend a sports day function when the bus driver lost control of the bus and it overturned. Up to now four children are critically injured, twelve of whom sustained serious injuries and forty-eight sustained minor injuries. They were taken to Nkonjeni Hospital for medical care.

After the bus overturned the driver fled the scene. However the bus was in an unroadworthy condition and it was impounded to the Melmoth Traffic Station.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Safety and Security Mr. Bheki Cele said that "the department will send out a technical team on Monday to conduct a full and thorough investigation to ind out if there was anything else which contributed to the crash besides the driver losing control of the bus". The bus belongs to Universal Samira of Chatsworth in Durban.
