LAUNCH OF CHILD PEDESTRIAN PROGRAMME
Monday 11 October 2004, at 10h00 Edendale Ecumenical Centre

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Safety and Security, Mr Bheki Cele and MEC for Education Ina Cronje will officially launch a special and historic "Child Pedestrian Programme" aimed at reducing road crashes involving school children in the province.

This historic programme is launched under the theme, "I PROMISE" which significantly binds young road users to be exemplary in adhering to rules of the road. Both MEC’s believe that children are the most vulnerable and yet precious group in our society and therefore their safety should be everybody’s business. Statistics indicate that in 2003 alone, 106 children (pedestrians) between the ages of 6-12 were and 27 between the ages 17-18 were killed on our provinces roads.

In pushing forward the Road Safety mandate it is imperative that we involve schools and other relevant stakeholders in ensuring that the message is heard and practiced. If we can successfully instill the "I Promise" message to our kids than the practicality of the message will impact greatly on our society. This event will be based on an info-tainment approach thus creating many photographic and visual opportunities.

There are many dynamic aspects within the Primary School Pedestrian Programme such as the Asiphephe Road Safety Club, Educator Resource Material and the Road Safety Mascot Programme which are all aimed at disseminating and promoting road safety messages to both children and educators.  Through these initiatives and under the umbrella of the "I Promise" theme, we will be able to make a significant contribution to reducing deaths on our roads.
