MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR SCHOOL PUPIL KILLED IN CROSS-FIRE
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Safety and Security
Bheki Cele has kept to his word to assist with funeral costs for the
burial of a youth who was killed by a stray bullet last week.
MEC Cele was in Umlazi this morning to hand over R10
000 to the family of 17-year-old Slindile Khuzwayo who was killed in
crossfire between police and robbers last Wednesday.
The MEC visited the Khuzwayo family last Friday and
assured them that whoever was to blame for the killing would be punished.
He also assured the family that he would dig into his
own pocket and contribute towards the funeral costs.
It is alleged that Khuzwayo, who was a grade 12 pupil
at Ganges High School, had just alighted from a bus in Umlazi when a
bullet hit her in the neck, killing her instantly. She had stepped into
the middle of a car-chase and shoot-out between police and hijackers,
which had started in Jacobs, Durban.
Meanwhile, MEC Cele will also attend a memorial service
for Slindile Khuzwayo to be held at the Ganges Secondary School, Merebank
south of Durban tomorrow (9/06/2004) commencing at 8am.
All media are invited to attend.
