MOTOR VEHICLE LICENCE FEES TO INCREASE
Motor vehicle licence fees in KwaZulu-Natal will
increase by five percent from 1 July and motorists who currently pay R186
for renewing their licences will now have to fork out R195.
Motor vehicle licence fees are determined by the
respective provincial transport MEC’s and differs from province to
province. The criteria used in determining licence fees include the cost
of maintaining the road network as well as inflation. Bearing in mind the
exorbitant costs of maintaining roads, a five percent increase is
therefore reasonable, particularly compared to other provinces whose
increases average around eight percent. Example, Western Cape motorists
currently pay R252 for an ordinary car.
When a car licence expires, the registered owner must
approach his or her appropriate registering authority and renew the
licence by paying the fee printed on the licence renewal notice which
would have been forwarded to him or her. If the motorist has not received
a licence renewal notice, he or she must approach his or her appropriate
registering authority together with acceptable identification, complete
the necessary documentation and then pay the fee due.
After the licence expiry date has lapsed, the owner of
the vehicle still has a further grace period of 21 days to license the
motor vehicle after which he or she would be liable to a fine.
