HIGHEST SPEED SINCE THE COMMENCEMENT OF EASTER
Traffic volumes on KwaZulu-Natal roads peaked just over 2500
vehicles per hour, with holidaymakers returning home. Favourable weather
provided for pleasant travelling conditions as the Easter Holidays come to a
close.
At 11 am this morning, a motorist was trapped travelling at
197 km/h on the northbound carriageway near Estcourt. Kaizer Victor Moticoe (39)
who works for Dunlop Tyres (Durban), was travelling from Durban to Witbank in a
red Audi A4. He was arrested and taken to Estcourt Police Station where he was
granted bail of R1000. He is scheduled to appear tomorrow morning in the
Estcourt Magistrates Court. This speed of 197 km/h is the highest speed recorded
since the commencement of the Easter Holidays.
Dhew Chander Singh was trapped driving at 158 km/h in a
Mercedes Benz with personalised plates, appeared before the Magistrate at the
Cato Ridge road side court, despite stating that he was unemployed, he was given
a fine of R5500.
Another motorist, Sihle Wiseman Zwane (24), a taxi driver
from KwaMashu Township was caught speeding at 124 km/h in excess of 100km/h, he
also was not in possession of a valid route permit. He was fined R2500 by
Magistrate Phoswa at the Cato Ridge road side court. He also stated that he was
unemployed.
Pedestrian fatality trends are beginning to emerge, these
figures include young children. Motorists must be aware that pedestrians will be
ever present on our roadways and motorists are requested to take caution as
increased numbers of pedestrians will be on our roads tomorrow and on election
day.
More passengers are making use of bakkies as a means of
transportation. Motorists are requested to be aware of these vehicles as any
collision involving bakkies can result in a number of fatalities.
3468 motorists have been charged for various vehicle defects
on vehicles. Specific defects such as tyres (634), Stop Lights (549), Lamps
front and rear (909) and Number Plates (154) are a cause for concern as we head
towards Winter, where motorists will experience early morning mist, overcast
conditions and possibly snow. These are all repairable faults that must be
checked on a regular basis.
The Department of Transport, in partnership with Gerry
Motors, Budget Rent-a-Car and Medi-Clinic Pietermaritzburg, provided two doctors
and essential medical equipment since the commencement of the Easter Holidays at
the Shell Ultra-City on the N3 at Estcourt.
Since the commencement of the Easter Holidays traffic
officials have worked 28 467 hours and have travelled 216 299 kilometers in the
