KWAZULU-NATAL TRANSPORT MEC OPENS ACCESS ROAD
The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport, safety& liaison Bheki Cele has urged all employees in his department to treat members of the public particularly those who are weak, with respect.
Cele was speaking at Umlazi south of Durban yesterday where he was officially opening an access road in the area.
Cele said that the construction of this R3.5 million road formed part of the fulfilment of the people’s contract to improve the lives of the people of South Africa and also in line with president Thabo Mbeki’s Batho Pele programme (People first).
The road would improve the level of municipal services in the area which would then uplift the standard of living of residents.
“This road will improve access to, among other things, emergency vehicles in the area, public transport and provide safety to pedestrians and motorists,” said Cele.
“This clearly shows that our duty today is to defend the weakest. Those who could not access schools, clinics, pension pay points because of poor road infrastructure,” said Cele.
Previously, the road which is situated in the township’s informal settlement was a narrow gravel track with very steep gradients and no storm water runoff control. As a result, the condition of the road deteriorated which made it impassable to passenger vehicles and during rainy weather it became a safety hazard for pedestrians.
All media are invited to attend. Please note picture opportunities.
