POLICE DETECTIVE SHOT DEAD

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Safety and Security Mr. Bheki Cele has ordered that a special investigation team be put together to probe the killing of Durban Detective who was shot whilst on duty this morning.

The Detective, who was part of the team which is investigating the escape of more than forty prisoners from Westville Prison, was busy charging suspects at Mayville police station together with another SAPS colleague at about 11am today. After having completed, it is alleged that the Detective and his colleague drove up Jan Smuts Avenue into Waterfall Road in Durban where they noticed a white VW Jetta that was stalled in front of them. They then approached the Jetta to see what was wrong and a passenger in the Jetta, who is alleged to be one of the escapees, got out of the vehicle and opened fire on the police. The Detective was killed instantly and his colleague was injured in the stomach and has been admitted to hospital. Both SAPS members were stationed at Sydenham SAPS. The suspects are still at large.

MEC Cele has instructed the Head of Detective Services in KZN Commissioner Pat Brown to put together a special investigation team to ensure that the person responsible for the murder of this police officer is speedily brought to book. "We cannot allow these police killings to continue and those who commit these callous murders must go to jail. I will personally ensure that all our resources are effectively utilised to secure the arrest of these criminals and that a strong message is sent out that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated. We will work together with the Justice Department so that harsh sentences that will act as a meaningful deterrent are meted out to police killers," Cele said.

Cele has expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes the injured police officer a speedy recovery.
