56 LEARNERS TO RECEIVE THEIR DRIVING LICENCES
As part of the School Driver Education Programme of the KwaZulu-Natal
Department of Transport, KZN MEC for Transport, Safety and Security Mr.
Bheki Cele will present driving licences to 56 learners at the YMCA Hall
in Pietermartizburg tomorrow, 28 June 2004 commencing at 10am.
92 learners from 88 schools in the province participated. The School
Driver Education Programme focuses on Grade 12 learners with driving
schools of a local area being involved in the practical aspects of the
project.
Three high schools in each of the four Department of Transport regions
of Pietermartizburg, Empangeni, Ladysmith and Durban were identified by
our Community Road Safety Councils for participation according to a
pre-determined set of criteria. The learners are then tested according to
the K53 testing method.
The objectives of the programme include the following:
- To create an opportunity for high school learners to be properly
trained in the best possible methods of vehicle control;
- To inculcate and develop proper skills required to deal with all
road conditions and circumstances;
- To instill proper road behaviour and attitude that is required by a
trained driver;
- To assist in accident reduction by producing properly trained
drivers; and
- To empower local driving schools and improve their skills.
All media are invited to attend. Please note picture opportunities.
