Food Producers and ProcessorsFoods manufacture in KwaZulu-Natal covers a wide
range of products, and includes the distribution of many
products manufactured elsewhere in the country, or
imported.
Concentrations of food manufacturers occur in the
Congella, Phoenix, Pietermaritzburg and Pinetown,
but factories are also located in many smaller towns such
as Stanger, Verulam, Port Shepstone and Hammarsdale.
Products in this section include sweets and confectionery,
biscuits, nuts, frozen prepared foods, frozen vegetables,
condiments, beverages, pastas, and canned and processed
foods.
For many of the products sold, ingredients are imported
from all over South Africa and from Swaziland; in many
cases, the products are processed at source and are then
transported into KwaZulu-Natal for distribution.

Due to the diversity of products, estimation of total
tonnage is not practicable, but food sales through the
formal retail sector in SA exceed R900 million per
annum, of which 25% is prepared foods and 30% is frozen
vegetables. Sales of this magnitude give indications of
the potential tonnage of product that is being carried on
the roads of the province.
In addition, a considerable but unrecorded proportion of
food production in KwaZulu-Natal is distributed over
almost the whole of the SADC region by the major
producers which include the Southern African area in their
production and marketing plans.
South African canned foods , condensed milk, processed
meats, milk powder, tea, coffee, soft drinks, etc, make up
the major proportion of goods sold in Southern
African countries, and many of these are sourced from
KwaZulu-Natal. Transport of FoodsAlmost all food products in KwaZulu-Natal are transported
by road in box-type vehicles which may be refrigerated,
depending on the products conveyed.
Due to the need for hygiene in the transport and handling
of food products, they are almost always securely packed
and shrink-wrapped in cartons to avoid damage and
contamination of the contents.
