Iron and Steel ProductionThe steel industry in KwaZulu-Natal is primarily located
at Newcastle.
Inputs include iron ore from Thabazimbi in Limpopo
province and coal from Ellisras in Limpopo province,
Mpumalanga and local mines, as well as 300,000 tons of
petroleum coke imported via Richards Bay.
A large ferro-manganese plant is situated at Cato Ridge
that exports through the port of Durban.
Outputs are mainly various forms of steel and alloys.
Approximately 1.0 million tons of export steel was railed
(700,000 tons through Durban and 298,000 tons
through Richards Bay) in 2006.
About 420,000 tons of the more fragile sections and
extrusions are transported by road to destinations all
over South Africa.
By-products include slagment that is used for production
of cement at the Newcastle works and railed to a Durban
cement producer. Export steel is handled in Durban at the Ensimbini
Terminal, which also handles outputs from Vereeniging and
Vanderbijlpark. In Richards Bay steel is handled at the
Multi-Purpose Terminal. Exports through Richards Bay
include: ferro alloys 2.7 million tons; pig iron 489,000
tons; miscellaneous steel products 298,000 tons; and
miscellaneous base metals 443,000 tons.
The terminal handled approximately 1,287,356 tons of steel
in 2006.
