Vegetable Oil ProductionProduction of vegetable oil products in KwaZulu-Natal is
largely centralised in the Pietermaritzburg area and, to a
lesser extent, Durban, with a few major undertakings
producing cooking oils and margarine from sunflower,
canola, maize and groundnut.
Most of the inputs to the production process are received
by road from the port of Durban with the exception of
maize and some local sunflower, which is received from
inland areas.
When available, sunflower seed is received on road from
the production areas that are mainly in the Free State and
Northern Province. Imports of unspecified animal and vegetable oils in 2006
through the port of Durban amounted to 675,440 tons, and
sunflower imports amounted to 189,717 tons for the same
year. A proportion of this volume is used in KZN and the
balance is transported inland, mainly by road.
The annual production of oil and margarine is estimated to
be 300,000 tons per annum. The packed oil products are
distributed throughout KZN and all over South Africa to
wholesalers and retailers.
South Africa is a net importer of sunflower and oil seeds,
so that coastal mills generally import their requirements
whilst inland mills tend to absorb most of the local
production of 600,000 tons per annum.
The by-product of the oil milling process, oil seed cake,
is used by the animal feeds industry. This is transported
to the feed mills by road.
