Schroeders-Bruyns Hill Branch LineThis is a 24 km branch line, of which only 18 km is
presently in
operation. It was opened in 1915 to serve the local
farming community and the village of Wartburg. Most
traffic consisted of wattle bark, poles, firewood and
charcoal, as well as parcels traffic to
Wartburg. During the 1920s demand for wattle mine
props
diminished and traffic fell from some 4,200 tons in 1925
to less than 3,000 tons in 1928. The previous small profit
was,
therefore, turned into a loss.
The branch has a 1 in 50 gradient and a 16 ton axle-load
restriction. Because of the poor condition of the line
a 30 km/hr speed restriction is in force. The only
traffic generated on the branch in 2005/2006 was
about 3,000 tons of treated timber from Mkabela, bound
for destinations mainly in Namibia. For Details of
