Richards Bay-Vryheid East-Piet Retief-Ermelo (the coal line)Opened in April 1976s, this 594 km line (Richards
Bay-Broodsnyersplaas) connects the coal mining areas near
Witbank in Mpumalanga with the coast at Richards Bay. It
is South Africa’s premier ‘heavy-haul’
line, and currently
moves some 80 million tons of export coal a year. This is
expected to increase to over 90 million tons after
improvement to the line during the next five years.
An additional 10 million tons of export mineral traffic,
timber and other traffic currently moves over the route
and, if it becomes necessary, traffic from the
Durban-Gauteng main line can be re-routed over this line.
At
present some 30 to 35 trains are operated daily in
each direction on the line which has a theoretical
capacity of 74 trains in each direction per day.
