MAINTENANCE OF INFRASTRUCTURE AND ROLLING STOCKDanskraal
The electric running shed at Danskraal is used to
service locomotives working on the Free State line and the
Glencoe–Vryheid line, as well as shorter-haul Natcor
traffic. There is a large infrastructure maintenance
facility at Danskraal with storage space for rail and
other track components.
Nseleni
The diesel running shed caters for running repairs on
locomotives operating over the Golela line and to
Komatipoort. It is also a crew booking on and off point.
Umbilo
This is the running shed for electric locos operating
on the Natcor line (Durban to Gauteng) line, as well as
the North and South Coast lines. Only light running
repairs are undertaken here and it is a crew signing on
and off point. Electric locos operating in the Durban area
at Bayhead, Kings Rest and to Fynnland and Wests are
serviced here as well. Vryheid East
The running shed at Vryheid East is used mainly for
light maintenance by diesel and electric locos performing
shunting duties here. Locomotives are supplied for use on
the Hlobane line, as well as local hauler work. There is
a wagon maintenance facility for repair work and the
replacement of wearing components such as brake blocks.
Any other work required for air or vacuum brake wagons is
undertaken here as well.
Wentworth
This is the main heavy repair facility for diesel
locomotives operating in KwaZulu-Natal. This includes
weekly and annual inspections, as well as intermediate
overhaul to electrical and mechanical components. Staff
from Wentworth are sent to outlying places to undertake
programmed and emergency repair work.
