Introduction to Road FreightThe road freight corridors of KwaZulu-Natal are some of
the busiest routes in South Africa. The N3/N11
corridor between Durban and Gauteng and the interior
handles approximately 27.5 million tons of road freight
per annum.
The N2 corridor route from Richards Bay to Mpumalanga via
Piet Retief, is an important route for timber, coal and
other commodities.
To the South of Durban, the N2 corridor links KZN to the
Eastern Cape and the southern regions of South Africa.
From the surveys conducted in this project it is apparent
that road traffic volumes continue to grow on most
routes. The number of survey points has expanded in
this freight databank update to 55, to provide a more
comprehensive coverage of the main freight routes in the
province.
The surveys of tonnage and commodities on the main
national corridors highlight the large increases in import
traffic. Majority of this traffic is containers and fuels
from the coast to inland areas by road.
In this freight databank a detailed analysis of road and
rail transport is provided as an aid to the
officials charged with the management of the regulation
and movement of goods in the province.
The statistical information from the road freight surveys
is accessible via the link in the navigation column on the
right of this page.
