Requirements for a Driving Licence

THERE are different categories of licences for motor cycles, cars, heavy and articulated motor vehicles.

Motor cycles Code A1 16 years and older
Motor cycles  Code A 18 years and older
Light vehicles  Codes B and EB 18 years and older
Heavy vehicles  Codes C1, C, EC1, EC 18 years and older

N.B. The Code A1 licence is for a motor cycle without a sidecar and with an engine not exceeding 125 cm³.

The requirements to book a test for a driving licence

The day of the test

You must have a valid learner’s licence and identity document

Four black and white passport-size photographs

A fee of R115.00 for the issue of a licence

Have an eye test before the driving test

If successful, your fingerprints will be taken to process your card type driver’s licence

You will be issued with a temporary licence that is valid for six months

You must collect your temporary driver’s licence within two working days. If you don’t, you may be asked to do another test. You must collect your card type licence six weeks after the date of your test from the test centre office. You must produce an identity document to collect it. You will have to pass a yard test and a road test to qualify for a licence. You can your own vehicle or one belonging to a driving school for a test.

All new licences issued are valid for five years. You have to return to a test centre for the issue of a new licence before the end of the expiry date when your sight will again be tested.

The cost of converting from the old ID book licence to the current plastic card type licence is R115.

You do not need a licence for a scooter or motor cycle with an engine size that is less than 125 cm³.
